This page covers the CryptoTxn iOS app. Setup work, nodes, and hosting are quoted separately on cryptotxn.io.

1. How to get help

Write to hodl@cryptotxn.io. Tell us the app version, your iPhone model and iOS version, which mode you use (Hosted by CryptoTxn or My own server), and what you see on screen. A screenshot helps.

Never send us a seed phrase, a private key, an xpub, a Bolt card key, or a password. We will never ask for them. If someone claiming to be CryptoTxn asks, it is not us.

The app is in French and English. Switch any time with the flag buttons.

2. Connecting your own BTCPay Server

In My own server, add your BTCPay Server URL. You can also add a local URL and an onion URL. The status light comes from your server at /api/v1/health.

If the status stays red, check that the URL opens in Safari on the same phone, that the certificate is valid, and that the server is reachable from the phone’s network.

3. Tor and .onion addresses

The app does not run a Tor service. If your server has an onion address, you can reach it through Orbot. Start Orbot, then open CryptoTxn. A green indicator shows that the app reaches your onion URL.

If it stays grey or red, check that Orbot is connected and that the onion address is typed in full, including .onion.

4. Staff mode and owner mode

You set an admin PIN and a staff PIN. Staff tiles open with the staff PIN. They do not use the owner’s login. The default is the POS keypad only. You decide which other tiles staff can tap.

Owner tiles, BTCPay admin, wallets, logs, and the NFC Manager stay behind the admin PIN and Face ID.

Tip: staff often know the phone’s passcode. The NFC Manager never accepts it, but keep your admin PIN different from it anyway.

5. Guided Access: lock the phone to the app

Guided Access is an iOS feature from Apple. It keeps the iPhone in one app until someone ends the session. The CryptoTxn app does not control it.

  1. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then tap Guided Access and turn on Guided Access.
  2. Tap Passcode Settings, then Set Guided Access Passcode. Use a code your staff do not know. You can also turn on Face ID as another way to end a session.
  3. Open CryptoTxn and go to the staff POS screen. Triple-click the side button (the Home button on older iPhones). If the Accessibility Shortcuts panel appears, tap Guided Access. Then tap Start.
  4. To end the session, triple-click the side button (double-click on iOS 18 or earlier), enter the Guided Access passcode or use Face ID, then tap End.

Optional: before you tap Start, tap Session Settings (or Options) to turn off the Side Button or Volume Buttons, or circle parts of the screen that should not respond to touch. Leave Time Limit off. Keep Touch on, or staff cannot use the keypad.

While a Guided Access session is running, Crash Detection and Emergency Services are not available. End the session to make an emergency call.

6. NFC Manager and Bolt cards

The NFC Manager is for the owner only. It asks for Face ID first. If Face ID does not confirm the owner, it asks for the 6-digit admin PIN. If you have not set an admin PIN yet, the app asks you to create one before the manager opens. The device passcode is not used.

It writes, reads, and formats Bolt cards (NTAG 424 DNA) for a backend you run yourself, for example LNbits or the Boltcard Factory plugin on your BTCPay Server. The app does not run a server or a Lightning backend. Payments made with a card go through that backend and the wallet behind it, which you or your provider control.

Card keys created or loaded by the NFC Manager are stored in the iOS Keychain on that iPhone. They are not included in the app’s saved data or backups, and they are not written to the usage log. CryptoTxn has no access to them.

7. Lost or replaced phone

Card keys (Key 0, Key 1, Key 2) are not moved to a new iPhone automatically. An iCloud restore, a Finder backup, or a new phone will not bring them across, and the card chip does not reveal them.

You can move them by hand while a copy still exists:

  • From the old iPhone: open the NFC Manager, confirm with Face ID or your admin PIN, scan the card, and copy Key 0, Key 1, and Key 2. On the new iPhone, open the NFC Manager, paste the three keys, and save the card.
  • From your backend: if the card was created in LNbits or the BTCPay Boltcard Factory, the card’s page there has the same three keys. Copy them into the NFC Manager on the new phone.

If the old iPhone is gone and your backend no longer has the keys, they cannot be recovered. The card keeps working for payments as long as your backend has them, but formatting or rewriting it needs the keys. Treat copied keys like a password and do not send them to anyone, including us.

If a phone is lost:

  • Disable the cards in your backend if you think someone else may use them.
  • Change the admin PIN and staff PIN on the new phone.

8. Wallets and funds

CryptoTxn is not a wallet. Payments go through BTCPay Server, on cryptotxn.net or on your own server, into the wallet you configured there. We cannot see, move, or reverse those payments. We can suspend a cryptotxn.net account under our terms; that never touches funds in your wallet. For wallet questions, use the support of the wallet or service you chose.

9. App Store purchase

The €9.99 own-server unlock is sold by Apple. For refunds, ask Apple. See our Terms of sales and Privacy Policy.
